OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT-4o, an upgraded version of the ChatGPT-4 model that drives its main product, ChatGPT. The updated model is “significantly quicker” and improves “functionalities across text, vision, and audio,” as announced by OpenAI’s CTO Mira Murati in a live broadcast on Monday. It will be accessible at no cost for all users, and premium users will still “enjoy up to five times the capacity limits” compared to free users, Murati explained.

GPT-4o is the latest premier model from OpenAI, capable of real-time reasoning across audio, visual, and textual data. It is designed to be accessible at no cost to all users. GPT-4o is designed to be accessible to anyone possessing an OpenAI API account and can be utilized with the Chat Completions API, Assistants API, or Batch API. This model is also compatible with function calls and the JSON mode, and users can begin exploring it via the Playground.

Accessing ChatGPT-4o via the API

OpenAI has announced that GPT-4o will initially be available in ChatGPT and the API as a text and vision model. Specifically, GPT-4o will be accessible in ChatGPT Free, Plus, and Team, as well as in the Chat Completions API, Assistants API, and Batch API.

Users of the free tier will automatically be assigned to GPT-4o, although message restrictions may vary based on usage and demand. If GPT-4o is not available, free-tier users will be switched to GPT-3.5. However, advanced communication features, including data analysis, file uploads, browsing, discovering and using GPTs, and vision capabilities, are limited for free-tier access.

It’s worth noting that GPT-4o provides advanced vision capabilities, improving the precision of photo uploads.

Free tier users have the option to upgrade to Plus at any time via ChatGPT:

Subscribers of ChatGPT Plus and Team gain access to both GPT-4 and GPT-4o on chatgpt.com, with an increased usage cap.

ChatGPT Plus and Team users can choose GPT-4o from the drop-down menu at the top of the page. After making a successful payment of $5 or more (use tier 1), users can access the GPT-4, GPT-4 Turbo, and GPT-4o models through the OpenAI API.

Starting from May 13th, 2024, ChatGPT-4o Plus account users can send up to 80 messages every 3 hours, while ChatGPT-4 Plus account users can send up to 40 messages in the same timeframe. However, these limits may be adjusted during peak hours to ensure the broadest user access. It’s crucial to note that unused messages do not accumulate; any unused quota within a given 3-hour period will not be carried over to the next cycle on either platform. Furthermore, within ChatGPT Team workspaces, the message caps for both GPT-4 and GPT-4o are set higher than those for ChatGPT Plus accounts.
