Ukrainian Drone Attack Ignites Massive Fire at Russian Oil Depot Near Sochi
SOCHI, RUSSIA – An overnight Ukrainian drone strike on an oil depot near the Black Sea resort city of Sochi has sparked a major fire, Russian authorities confirmed on Sunday, August 3, 2025. The attack, which follows a week of intensified cross-border hostilities, caused thick plumes of black smoke to billow from the facility and led to the temporary suspension of flights at the local airport.

The governor of Russia’s Krasnodar region, Veniamin Kondratiev, stated on Telegram that the drone debris struck an oil tank, which ignited the blaze. Emergency services reported that a fuel tank with a capacity of 2,000 cubic meters was burning, and more than 120 firefighters were deployed to contain the fire. Sochi Mayor Andrei Proshunin assured the public that the situation was “totally under control” and reported no casualties.
The incident is particularly notable as attacks on Sochi, a city that hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics and is located approximately 400 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, have been relatively rare compared to other Russian cities. However, this is not the first time the region has been targeted; local authorities reported that two people were killed in drone attacks there late last month.
The attack on the Sochi oil depot is part of a broader pattern of strikes by both nations. Russia’s defense ministry claimed its air defenses shot down 93 Ukrainian drones overnight, while also reporting missile strikes on multiple Ukrainian cities. In the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv, a Russian missile strike reportedly wounded at least seven people and damaged numerous residential buildings.
Ukrainian authorities have not officially commented on the Sochi incident, but Kyiv has previously stated its intention to escalate air strikes on Russian infrastructure in retaliation for recent intensified Russian attacks on its territory, which have killed dozens of civilians. The ongoing violence comes despite recent diplomatic efforts, including a call from U.S. President Donald Trump for a ceasefire.
The attack highlights the expanding geographical scope of the conflict and Ukraine’s continued focus on targeting Russian energy infrastructure, which it views as critical to Moscow’s war effort. As the two sides trade blows, the cycle of violence continues to escalate, bringing the war to new, previously untouched areas.
