UN Commission Accuses Israel of ‘Genocide’ in Gaza; Israel Rejects Findings as ‘False’
GENEVA – A UN-mandated commission of inquiry has released a landmark report concluding there are “reasonable grounds to conclude” that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. The findings, released in a document on Tuesday, mark one of the most significant international condemnations of the war to date and are likely to spark outrage and controversy on the global stage.

The Commission’s Allegations
The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, East Jerusalem, and Israel stated that Israel has carried out four of the five “genocidal acts” defined under the 1948 Genocide Convention. These alleged acts include:
- Killing members of a group
- Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group
- Deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about the group’s physical destruction
- Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group
The commission, led by former UN human rights chief Navi Pillay, based its conclusions on extensive analysis of Israeli military operations, including the “unprecedented” numbers of Palestinian casualties, the imposition of a total siege on Gaza, and the destruction of civilian infrastructure. The report also cited “explicit statements” from high-level Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog, and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, as evidence of “genocidal intent.”
Israel’s Vehement Rejection
Israel has vehemently rejected the report, calling it “distorted and false.” The Israeli Foreign Ministry issued a statement dismissing the findings as a “scandalous, fake” document from individuals acting as “Hamas proxies” with “openly antisemitic positions.” The statement accused the commission of relying on “Hamas falsehoods” and ignoring the reality of the conflict, which began with the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023.
Israel has long accused the UN of having an anti-Israel bias and has refused to cooperate with the commission’s investigation. The country maintains that its military actions in Gaza are a legitimate response to the terror attacks by Hamas and are aimed at eliminating the threat posed by the militant group.
Global Repercussions
The report is expected to amplify calls for international action against Israel and could lead to renewed pressure from world powers for a ceasefire. It adds to a growing chorus of international bodies, including the International Court of Justice, which has previously ordered Israel to take all measures to prevent genocidal acts in Gaza. The UN commission’s definitive judgment, however, represents a new level of official condemnation.
The international community now faces increased pressure to address the commission’s findings and determine a path forward in a conflict that has divided nations and resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis.
