Overview of the SSC CGL 2025 Examination

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is gearing up to conduct its highly anticipated Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Examination 2025. This open competitive, computer-based examination (Tier-I) is provisionally scheduled for August 2025. It serves as a crucial gateway for recruiting individuals into various Group-B and Group-C government jobs across numerous Ministries, Departments, and Organizations under the Government of India.

The SSC CGL Exam is one of the most prominent recruitment drives in India, offering a wide array of career opportunities. Successful candidates will fill vital roles such as Audit/Section/Statistical/Accounts Officers, Inspectors, Sub-Inspectors, Investigators, Assistants, Superintendents, Auditors, Accountants, and Clerks. These positions are considered the backbone of central government administration, with selected candidates performing significant work in central government departments and ministries throughout India, including their attached and subordinate offices located in various States and Union Territories.

Key Dates and Examination Structure

The Tier-I (Computer Based Examination) is tentatively slated to take place from August 13 to August 30, 2025. Following this, the Tier-II (Computer Based Examination) is tentatively scheduled for December 2025. These two tiers are essential steps in the selection process for aspiring candidates.

Vacancies and Salary Structures

The SSC CGL Recruitment Examination 2025 is expected to offer a substantial number of opportunities, with approximately 14,582 tentative vacancies. However, the final number of vacancies will be confirmed closer to the examination date. These positions are categorized into different pay levels as per the 7th CPC Pay Matrix:

Pay Level-7: ₹44900-142400

This level includes esteemed roles such as:

  • Assistant Section Officer (ASO) in Central Secretariat Service (CSS), Intelligence Bureau (IB), Ministry of Railways, Ministry of External Affairs, AFHQ, and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeiY). Age limits generally range from 20-30 years, with some exceptions for 18-30 years.
  • Assistant/Assistant Section Officer in other Ministries/Departments/Organizations (Age: 18-30 years).
  • Inspectors of Income Tax in CBDT (Group C Non-Gazetted, Age: 18-30 years).
  • Inspectors (Central Excise), Inspectors (Preventive Officer), and Inspectors (Examiner) in CBIC (Age: 18-30 years).
  • Assistant Enforcement Officers (AEO) in Directorate of Enforcement, Department of Revenue (Age: 18-30 years).
  • Sub-Inspectors in Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) (Age: 20-30 years).
  • Inspector Posts in the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications (Age: 18-30 years).
  • Inspector in Central Bureau of Narcotics, Ministry of Finance (Age: 18-30 years).
  • Section Head in Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) (Age: 20-30 years).

Pay Level-6: ₹35400-112400

Positions in this pay scale include:

  • Assistant/Assistant Section Officer in other Ministries/Departments/Organizations (Age: 18-30 years).
  • Executive Assistant in CBIC (Age: 18-30 years).
  • Research Assistant in the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) (Age: 18-30 years).
  • Divisional Accountant in Offices under C&AG (Age: 18-30 years).
  • Sub-Inspector in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) (Age: 18-30 years).
  • Sub-Inspector/Junior Intelligence Officer in Narcotics Control Bureau (MHA) (Age: 18-30 years).
  • Junior Statistical Officer in the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (Age: 18-32 years).
  • Statistical Investigator Grade-II in the Ministry of Home Affairs (Age: 18-30 years).
  • Office Superintendent in CBDT (Age: 18-30 years).

Pay Level-5: ₹29200-92300

Roles at this level typically have an age limit of 18-27 years and include:

  • Auditor in Offices under C&AG, Offices under CGDA, and Other Ministry/Departments.
  • Accountant in Offices under C&AG, Controller General of Accounts.
  • Accountant/Junior Accountant in Other Ministry/Departments.

Pay Level-4: ₹25500-81100

Positions at this level also have an age limit of 18-27 years and comprise:

  • Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant in the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications.
  • Senior Secretarial Assistant (SSA) / Upper Division Clerks (UDC) in Central Govt. Offices/Ministries other than CSCS cadres.
  • Senior Administrative Assistant in Military Engineering Services, Ministry of Defence.1
  • Tax Assistant in CBDT and CBIC.
  • Sub-Inspector in Central Bureau of Narcotics, Ministry of Finance.

Educational Qualifications

To be eligible for the SSC CGL Exam 2025, candidates must generally hold a Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from a recognized University. A significant point to note is that candidates appearing in the final year of their graduation are also eligible to apply, provided they possess the essential qualification on or before August 1, 2025.

For the specific post of Junior Statistical Officer, candidates need either:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in any subject from a recognized University or Institute with at least2 60% Marks in Mathematics at the 12th standard level.
  • OR A Bachelor’s3 Degree in any subject with Statistics as one of the subjects at the degree level.

Application Fee

A nominal application fee of ₹100/- is required. This can be conveniently paid through BHIM UPI, Net Banking, or by using Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, RuPay Credit, or Debit cards. Alternatively, candidates can pay in cash at an SBI Branch by generating an SBI Challan. Importantly, SC/ST/Persons with Disabilities (PH)/Ex-Servicemen and Women candidates are exempt from paying any application fee.
